Joan Martin

I aim to create a compassionate, safe and non-judgmental space for you to explore your thoughts, emotions and behaviours. While my approach is firmly rooted in the humanistic traditions of person centred therapy and existential therapy, I also integrate elements from other theories such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and mindfulness approaches.

My qualifications include a BA hons in Counselling and Psychotherapy and a BA in Psychology. My own life experiences have given me a deep understanding of the complexities of human existence and I am passionate about helping people navigate life’s toughest questions and issues. My journey into this field began with my own story - I’ve experienced the unique dynamics of working in a family business, embraced the chaos and joy of motherhood and have faced serious health challenges.

The therapeutic relationship is fundamental to counselling, it is built on trust, empathy and collaboration and is the backbone of our sessions.  With understanding and support I will provide gentle guidance allowing you to progress at your own pace to gain self-awareness and insight into your own challenges.

As an Integrative Counsellor, my approach is rooted in the understanding that each person is unique — and so are the challenges they face. I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all solutions; instead, I draw from a range of therapeutic approaches to tailor our work to your individual needs, preferences, and goals.

With a first-class honours degree in Counselling and Psychotherapy, alongside a wealth of practical experience, I bring both academic rigour and deep emotional insight to my practice. My previous career in financial services, followed by time dedicated to raising my children, gave me valuable life experience and strengthened my desire to pursue a path centred on emotional wellbeing and personal growth. Returning to study counselling was a natural step toward what has long been a genuine passion: supporting others through meaningful, lasting change.

I believe that the most effective therapeutic relationships are built on trust, empathy, and collaboration. My goal is to offer a safe, compassionate, and non-judgemental space where you feel heard, respected, and supported. We will work at your pace, exploring the issues that matter most to you, and helping you feel more grounded, empowered, and able to create positive change in your life.
